Psycho Geography Work shop

To start with we did a technique called frottage this is where we went outside to take rubbings from different surfaces using charcoal and paper. So we could see the different textures in walls, floors etc. This then lead to us cutting 8 squares and we chose out 4 favourite frottage rubbings and pressed clay onto the areas we chose. When we did the natural presses we made 4 tiles and created our man made tiles meaning we used objects such as lego and pressed them into clay creating a pattern.

Self Directed

Inspired by John Piper the subject matter is church's. Throughout this project I will be creating little samples using different medians showing which medias work well together.

Idea 1 Experimenting
Summarising idea 1: Church themed piece using a variety of materials such as clay, pen, ink, wax. Inspired by John Piper I will mainly be using bleach and ink however this could all change throughout the experimenting and developing process.
Experimenting:
In the experimental stages I have worked with different medias and surfaces such as cardboard, tissue paper, different types of materials (cotton, Muslim etc), ink, bleach. I even tried using tea bags to create texture.

Cardboard experiment
I really like how this turned out because you can make the painting/drawing look more rustic and ruined. By ripping the layers of the cardboard exposing textured areas. Just like the image shows below.
Inspired by Charles Marville I tried taking a picture of a detailed area of the church and seeing what textures I could do to make it more interesting. For example I added tissue paper and PVA around the image and then painting the tissue paper earthy colours.

Plaster experiment:

For Idea 2 I needed to experiment with different surfaces and seeing how different medias worked with them. So I tried plaster because it's quite a smooth surface yet you can fill it in a mould/shape. So I mixed the plaster of Paris with water and stirred it together. For the plaster to set it had taken an hour and a half.
When it had set I cut around the plaster so I could get it out of the tub. Using the smooth surface I decided to see how watercolour would work with it.
Personally I think it the out ok although the painting itself looks very flat so perhaps I could have either used a thick media such as scripture or used a fine liner to make some details bolder.
Before I attempted this experiment I didn't think it was going to work due to the watercolour being very thin and the surface to be very smooth. I didn't think it was going to dry very well. However it dried within a matter of seconds.

Health and Safety using plaster:

- Lay newspaper on your working place
- When using tools like knifes make sure you use it correct and have a firm grip on the handle
- plaster of Paris can be irritant to the skin and the eyes. (Coshh) wear protective clothing
- if you are doing a hand press make sure your hand isn't in the plaster for a long time because the plaster hardens as well as the the temperature of the plaster rises when it begins to set
- the plaster powder can scratch red and can cause losing sight
After using plaster throughly wash your hands as well as this if you are using large quantities of plaster of Paris make sure you wear dusk masks from preventing inhaling the dust particles.

Clay Experiment:

For Idea 2 I was thinking of replacing cardboard slabs with other Resitant materials like clay. I decided to do 2 samples using the low relief method focusing on 2 important parts of the church.

Church window:

I personally think this sample turned out really well however it was very fiddly I had to change the shape of the glass. What I like about using clay is that you can make a variety of different marks and textures using items such as a paint brush or cocktail stick etc. For this sample I used a cocktail stick so j could get the small details of the brick work.
For my potential outcome I could do a clay slab of an area of the church e.g clock I could do it instead of a cardboard slab just how Koshlyakov so I'm not using all of his techniques I'm incorporating my style into this.

Health and safety:
Clay is known for being very dusty which can harm you if you inhale a lot of the dust particles. The particles you may be inhaling can cause silicosis which can cause breathing problems and cause an early death. It can cause lung cancer as well. To prevent this from happening you have to use damp sponge/ mop after you have used the clay. If you are using a lot of clay perhaps you could wear a dust mask.
There are a couple of other things to reduce this from happening
- work in a very well ventilated room
- wash aprons regularly to get rid of the clay or just use disposable aprons
Mortar Experiment:

I made some mortar little samples to experiment with materials such as water colour and acrylic. The material itself appears to be very textured. However painting on it is quite difficult. First experiment was watercolour. I don't think watercolour would be ideal for the mortar material because the mortar absorbs the water quickly. Reducing the amount of colour showing up on the mortar. Definitely not vibrant or thick enough to put on mortar.
my second experiment was acrylic this has defiantly got more potential to work with the mortar and be on my proposed final outcome. As it is a lot thicker and you can layer it to create a more vibrant look about it. However the mortar rubs off revealing softer mortar making it difficult to paint on. As the mortar starts rubbing off on to the paint brush.

Health and safety:
When mortar gets on to the skin can become irritated and can cause a skin disease called demititas. To reduce this risk you should wash your hands on a regular basis with soap and water.
As well as this if mortar comes into contacts to you eyes it can cause irritation and can burn your eyes. To prevent this from happening you should wear goggles.
Finally if you consume a large amount of mortar your stomach and intestine become very irritated to prevent this from happening you should wear a mask.

Cement:

Inspired by Kiefer I decided to work on thicker materials like clay and cement.  Because he creates a lot of texture within his work. As well as this on top of the cement I wanted to incorporate Koshlyakov's style by using acrylic and applying it in a similar way. ( dragging the paint down to create dry brush strokes creating texture.)

Health and safety:
Again using cement can cause skin irritation if in contact with cement frequently you can get a skin disease called demetitas. To prevent this from happening you either wear clothes or throughly wash you hands with warm water and soap friendly between intevals.
Like the plaster when the cement sets the temperature increase and can cause burns to prevent this from happening you have to wear protective clothing such as gloves and boots.

Health and Safety
1.Preferably wear gloves when working with latex because it can get messy
2. Lay newspaper where you are working keeping the area clean afterwards
3. Wash hands if you have touched latex with bare hands
4. Preferably wear an apron

Latex Hand

First cut up strips of modrock soaking it in water layering it across my hand vertical all over and then horizontal. I made 3-4 layers of modrock making sure its strong enough when I take it off. After 20-30 minutes I slowly peeled the modrock off and you'll be left with a detailed cast of your hand. To make it a flimsy latex hand you cut some scrim and soak that in Latex also layering it inside the cast again about 3-4 layers of scrim.  Leave it over night for it to solidify. Once solidified you slowly peel the latex hand away from the cast. You are then left with a flimsy latex hand with every detail which is on my hand.

Low Relief Tile
Here I decided to do a low relief tile. The process of making this was not too difficult although it was quite fiddly. All I had to do was get a  piece of clay and roll it into a slab. Then getting a tile cutter (square) creating a clean cut square (base). Then using the excess clay I used to mould into lips and teeth. Personally I think it turned out ok perhaps I should have taken longer on the lines on the lips. It looks a bit rushed but it does create a different texture compared to the rest of the tile. Also I should have taken more time on the teeth they seem a bit basic.

Health and Safety
1. If clay gets in eye wash it thoroughly with cold water
2. Clean all utensils after use especially the rollers
3. Clean your personal surface with a damp cloth
4.Wash hands after using clay
5. Belongings under the table
6. Make sure you use each utensil with care especially the knives.

The preparation of my final sculpture I transferred my original collage onto my slab and
adding colour and detail by embossing and embellishing. To getting left with 3 low relief  meaning I completely changed the composition of the tiles. This is where I pointed out the good parts and bad parts on my tiles. Considering what was going to go on my final sculpture.

Final Sculpture
Throughout this journey I have experimented with colours and textures. Looking back at my collage I decided not to do I exactly because I thought there was too much colour and too much layering of shapes. However I did incorporate some things from my collage onto my sculpture. I chose to do squares and do another square around it but I carved it out emphasising the original square. As well as this I incorporated the Right angle triangle by itself just like the collage I stuck it with some slip making the triangle pop out more , creating different levels. To improve the structure of the sculpture I think I should have taken more time on perfecting the shape as the triangles look un even and the squares aren't the same size.
Colour
This is what I changed completely. Originally in my collage I had pinks , yellow, blue and red. Personally I think this is too much colour. So for my final sculpture I chose three colours. I chose blue, yellow and orange. I think they work well together but perhaps I could have chosen brighter colours. In my opinion I think it looks a bit dull. I also feel like it is a bit messier so I think I should have taken more time on the slip paint.
Overall I think my sculptures turned out alright because of the colours worked well together although I think I should have chosen brighter ones. Perhaps I should have taken more time on the slip painting so it looks more neat and precise. To improve it more I should have taken more time on perfecting the shape making them the same thickness and size.
